What sounds better, Mozart concerto and Quintet on "standard" clarinet or Basset clarinet. I prefer basset clarinet but what about everybody else out there.

Can only give personal preference, of course, but based on only two basset recordings I've heard (Shifrin and Sabine Meyer), I prefer the standard clarinet.

Feel free to recommend a basset recording that'll knock my sox off.›

Ralp G, You should try Erich Hoeprich version made with the orchestra of the 18th century and conducted by Frans Bruggen. IMO it´s the best one out there. Although, it is made on periodl intruments the intonation is not bad. I compared it to the other recordings made on period/original instruments (I don´t know the difference) and this one was WAY better. Try it. Amazon has a few sound clips about that recording in their website.

In era of Stadler, clarinets had straighter bores and may have sounded far brighter than today's clarinets:Charles Neidich plays often this type of clarinets.
Needs straight bore basset bore clarinets for comparison, played perhaps by masonist players.

To paraphrase Duke Ellington, "If it sounds *better*, it is *better*".

Hiroshi,
Visited your Mozart webpage. Interesting, so I bookmarked it.

I love the Basset clarinet - LIVE.

I don't think it has been well recorded.

I purchased the Opus3 version with a Swede playing the BC, and it's dull.
