Ok, I know that all mouthpieces are NOT created equal....(and I dont expect them to be) but I have a question.....
Are all Bb mouthpieces supposed to play on all Bb clarinets? the reason I ask, is my new Yammi 650 (wood) came with Yamaha's 'custom' mouthpiece (it is marked 4 C) My OLD Yammi (plastic) came with a Hite standard mpc, and I switched to a Vandoren B45 (for marching etc) because it is very free blowing....Ok. I really LIKE the mpc that came on my new Bb, (the interface is a bit more closed and narrower than the Hite and the B45) and am having no problems with it, (altho it is BLACK and my new clarinet is NOT-but thats ok)
But when I put my B45 on this clarinet, I could barely eek out any sound at all !!
Why is this? I play both instruments every week, switching back and forth depending on need, and they both play beautifully, with their respective mpc, but darn if the B45 wont play on my beautiful new wooden Yammi !! (I dont need it, but I AM curious as to this phenom and am wondering if anyone else has every come across with this on their clarinets)

Yep, Betty, I've experienced what you describe.
For whatever the reason, some mouthpieces are not compatible with some clarinets. The experts may be able to tell us why, I just know it happens.

Hmmm........perhaps an acoustical analogy would be that of impedance-matching? Maximum energy transfer when mouthpiece acoustic impedance matches that of the clarinet? Or is this just a FigNewton of our imagination?
I've played many clarinets with many mouthpieces, and concur that some mouthpieces certainly work better with some clarinets than with others, and verse-vicea. However, I've also observed that (as with reeds) the better the mouthpiece, the greater the percentage of clarinets with which it can work effectively; and conversely, a really bad mouthpiece won't work well with any clarinet.
My suggestion to Betty would be: in your spare time, try as many new/different mouthpieces as possible and try to find ONE that works well with both your clarinets (which I believe a decent mouthpiece should do).

Perhaps it's a mouthpiece/barrel incompatability problem. Try switching barrels.

Does the mouthpiece wobble slightly. If so, the join may not be airtight.

If your Vanddy plays good on your OLD Yammi and can barely eek out any sound at all on the NEW Yammi than the mystery is in the CORKKY!
Wrap some Teflon tape (Plumbers tape) around the cork and see what happens.
