I just saw Harry potter tonight!! It was great!
But know what was greater? The bass clarinet! There was bass stuff throughout the movie. I was amused. We evil little mischievous bass clarinets. >=)

Keep a listen whenever you see some sort of childs movie or any parts in a movie/show/cartoon that are supposed to be "silly". You'll OFTEN hear a clarinet or bass clarinet playing some little diddy!
Alexi <--- who got a lot of "SHHHHH!"s in the theatre for saying, "Guess what instrument that is" whenever a clarinet played a solo in Shrek 2.

Old cartoons have a lot of great bass clarinet licks. (That's why I watch them, right? It's actually part of my bass clarinet training regimen. At least that's what I tell the wife and kids...........)

Old cartoons have some great music in them.....lots of "flavor" instruments like bass sax and bass clarinet Don Byron's "Bug Music" has some nice examples of this genre of music.

Alexi, I did the same thing during Shrek 2!! LOL! My boyfriend keeps telling me to shut up... he doesn't care. He's a percussionist and wouldn't care anyway. :P
For a music history paper this year, I mentioned how in Stravinsky's Rite of Spring the bass clarinet was the ominous evil little instrument that would come in to be ominous and evil. Then I said "Go Bass clarinet!!" My teacher was amused; he guessed I played bass. haha. Got an A on that paper.

I noticed that too! Went and saw it with out band council, turned to the girl next to me and both of us went "wow, that's a cool bass clarinet part!"
So many instruments to play........so little time to play them!

Wow, I've been out-nerded!

It's so great that you can hear the bass clarinet in the movies. The few movies I've been to in the near past all seem to have synthesized music recorded in Australia or some other offshore place. In the "Matrix Revolution", a terrible movie, the synthesized oboe had an oboish sound with a mechanical vibrato. It's all about making money.
In the real old cartoons, such as the 30s or 40s, a lot of the bass clarinet recordings were done by the legendary Glen Johnston, the mouthpiece man. He was also noted for making some early extensions to low C for bass clarinets. I have an extension to low D that I think he made.

I applaud the movies where the actors actually care enough to at least TIME their fingers with the changing notes to make it at least PARTLY believable.

"synthesized music recorded in Australia or some other offshore place"
Ok, firstly- if it's recorded then it's not synthesised. Second, you callin Australia off-shore? Third, Eaton Studios in Melbourne records some Hollywood scores because it's cheap and effective. And, as it happens, we have some awesome musos here.

I noticed in the credits to Harry Potter 3 that the music was done by the London Symphonia (also the orchestra for the 1st movie's soundtrack)...I think they are a superb orchestra worth of more recognition!
The bass clarinetist was very enjoyable to listen to; I also remembered some particulary nice solos from the concertmistress and the principal flutist! The concertmistress got a screen credit at the end; hopefully one day the entire orchestra will get screen credit recogition as well.
As a movie, I liked the first two more. I have heard that they are using another director for movie 4, and the movie will be about an hour longer than movie 3.

To Alexi,
You gave me another reason to definitely go to see Shrek 2 (scheduled to be on theatre on June 18 in Korea!).
To others who mention "old cartoons in the 30s and 40s",
could you tell me the titles? Are you referring to Disney movies or something else?

To be more specific, Alexi, my comment while riding Pirates was far nerdier than that... along the lines of "if his fingers are that far from the holes he's not covering, he's sure to be sharp"

lol. Allright. I admit it! You win!
caclaws,
I'm talking about the old Looney Tunes cartoons, or other Warner Bros cartoons. Also, lots of times just the childish cartoons on TV (for instance when the Animaniacs were around, popeye cartoons, etc. etc.) You'll hear tons of clarinet/bass clarinet anytime something silly is happening on screen.

I did some of the sessions for the film on clarinet and bass clarinet but the bass clarinet solos were played by Anthony Pike.He plays for the English Chamber Orchestra. The other clarinettists were Nick Rodwell,Dave Fuest,
Roy Willox,Dave White,Richard Adddison,Alan Barnes,Nick Bucknall, and I think someone else.Sorry It,s a few months ago.

Yes, I noticed the solo's in the movie. I thought they were brilliant, I am definitely going to pick up a copy of the soundtrack when it comes out.
I''m an obsessive harry potter fan as well, it's nice to see my clarinet obsession meeting another obsession!
