I just had the wonderful experience of witnessing a series of teaching seminars held by the Emerson Quartet members at Stony Brook University. The events were open to the public. Four string quartets, ranging from a student group from Julliard to a professional quartet performed pieces that were critiqued by members of the Emerson quartet. It was fascinating to see violinists receive advice such as "take a breath there." (I guess us woodwind players might benefit sometimes from being told to "play like you are bowing"). I must say that watching string players closely and taking up the cello myself has re-invigorated my clarinet playing!

The Emereson Q. is one of the finest groups about...they play with incredible sonority and with clean lyric phrasing. They are all brilliant players...they are today what the Amadeus used to be to us in the 60s.

It really is incredible what clarinetists can learn by watching and performing with string players (or taking up a stringed instrument.) The interaction between the members of a string quartet is truly extraordinary. With the Emerson Quartet, I truly felt I was in the presence of masters.
