 old clarinet needs date??

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about an old clarinet that was given to me. It appears to be silver. On the horn part it say: WOLVERINE-GRINNELL BROS-DETROIT MICHIGAN. I really don't know about clarinets--I play the organ, but I tried researching the company and only found pianos listed. I searced a serial # site for clarinets--no luck there either. It has a serial # of AB1454. I anyone can give me any info...I'd really appreciate it!

Grinnel Bros. was a very large music company in Detroit back in the early 20th century. They were not an instrument manufacturer, but rather resold instruments made & labelled with the Grinnel name.

It's well-nigh impossible to accurately date that type of clarinet.

Early 1900's, '10-30 ? Being "from" Lansing MI [years ago] , we had a Grinnell Bros. store there also, so your inquiry rang the bell. We had a similar question in '02 and my, et al's, guesswork [search our archives] was that White-King, Cleveland; Bettoney, Boston; or Conn, Elkhart could have been the maker of this "stencil" clarinet. A few months ago, Jim Lande, our "resident" metal cl collector/expert , posted a lengthy listing of metals, so look for this, possibly contact Jim directly, he is very helpful and will be interested. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

It is probable that this is a student grade clarinet and is nickel plated. It is highly unlikely that a "stencil" clarinet would be silver.
