I just had the wonderful experience of witnessing a series of teaching seminars held by the Emerson Quartet members at Stony Brook University. The events were open to the public. Four string quartets, ranging from a student group from Julliard to a professional quartet performed pieces that were critiqued by members of the Emerson quartet. It was fascinating to see violinists receive advice such as "take a breath there." (I guess us woodwind players might benefit sometimes from being told to "play like you are bowing"). I must say that watching string players closely and taking up the cello myself has re-invigorated my clarinet playing!
