When is it time to buy a new mouthpiece?
Author: Sam

I have had my Gigliotti Mouthpiece (number 2) for about a year and a half now. I am starting to develope an intrest in the sound other mouthpieces might make.
Problem is I feel like I would be ripping off the life of the mouthpiece I have now if I was to go out and buy a new one.

So, would you please tell me when it is time for change.
Thanks

Sam

This is really a personal preference. You can even just add another mouthpiece to your ammo box. I keep 2 barrels, 2 mouthpieces and even seperate reeds for each set up. You have to go out and see if you like any other mouthpieces enough to use them on a regular basis. It does not necessarily mean you will like them better than you current mp but they might have characteristics you want for certain playing situations. Go forth and explore for you have only just begun. Hope this helps....

When is the right time to purchase a new mouthpiece...well, the answer isn't all that simple - and I have about 6 mouthpieces to prove it. What I would recommend, especially since you're interested in the sounds of various mouthpieces is to get a few mouthpieces to take home and try out. Most places will let you. A mouthpiece is a personal thing and I have various mouthpieces depending on what kind of sound I want. But my favourite is the Vandoren M13. I seem to get a good open sound. Just a suggestion as there are many to choose from

Any time is good. Get yourself a mouthpiece chart and begin experimenting to develop different set-ups: different makes -materials-tip openings- to acheive different effects.

I'd just received my new Runyon with the removeable baffle - red transparent synthetic, faced at 046: I put a MS Fibracell on it and it took me to 2nd-G-above-the-staff with no effort. Awesome!
