I have a Buffet R-13 clarinet, about a year old. The G right above the staff doesn't come out very well (without excess noise before it - you know what I'm talking about) when I tongue the note, especially stacatto. I would think it was my embouchure but no other note in that register is as troublesome and I have an appropriate embouchure. I have to significantly relax my embouchure for it to come out right away, which makes it sounds bad anyway. I'm pretty sure nothing's wrong with the clarinet - I've taken it for repairs and had it given a general lookover but nothing seems to be wrong. It's fine when I slur to it and the same-fingering C is fine. Why could this be happening?

Jess,
Have you had it play tested by someone else?

The hole may need undercutting a bit more, quite surprising as the buffets are always very accurate. Is the A above good or is there resistance also? Speak to a maker or a very good repairer.

It could be a leaky pad on the upper joint, or even poor hand position. Be sure you are getting a positive seal on each of the tone holes with your fingers. Hans is right -- For a $2000 instrument, it is worth spending $50 - 100 to go take a diagnostic lesson with a pro in Pittsburgh to look over the horn and observe your playing technique. Probably get it diagnosed in about 5 minutes.
