 I wonder...

We had a guy come to our school and show us some Selmer clarinets. He says he isn't a rep or sales person, but I think he was. lol. His name is Jean-Francois... I forgot his last name. I'm sure someone has heard of him.

Anyway, I played on a couple of the Selmers, and they were really nice. I liked the Signature and Recital. Which one is the fat one (as I like to call it, a lot of wood, small bore)?

On to my point...
My school is mainly a Buffet school, I think only 2 people play Selmers. One just switched from Buffets to Selmers after buying Loren Kitt's (who teaches at our school) set.

Also, the school bought a Selmer bass clarinet a couple of years ago, but it doesn't seem that Selmer is at the top of list of clarinets to look at. Why is this? Is it because people are used to saying Buffet is that best or what?

Hi Bonnie,
The one with the smallest bore is the Recital at 0.563 inches while the Signature's bore is 0.575 inches. You can find the rest of the specs here: http://www.selmer.com/htdox/clar4.htm
Regards,
Hans

The last time I picked up a Recital I noticed it was HEAVIER in weight, but the Signature is probably heavier than Buffet, too.

Buffet is lower in Carbs & tastes waaaay better !!!

The Selmer rep is Jean-Francois Bescond, a very fine clarinetist and extremely nice guy, now living in the DC metro area with his family --- I have been honored to play in a clarinet choir with him this past year since he came to the U.S. He also plays in a number of chamber groups around town.

Yeah, I knew you would know him, David. You know everyone!

He is doing a quartet performance with another friend of mine, Cath Ogram, this month.

He was really nice, and funny. :)

Goes with the territory of being a 'rep'. I'm not saying that he's ONLY nice and funny because he's a rep, but probably more along the lines of one of the reasons he was chosen to be the rep was probably because he was very sociable.

I know if I were running a company I wouldn't want Ebanezer Scrooge as MY rep....

The Selmer Paris website has info and real purty hi-res pictures, though it's in French:

I'll add a "me, too" with regard to Jean-Francois. He was the Selmer rep at a clarinet fest I attended at UMass-Lowell earlier this year, and is extremely knowledgeable, funny and approachable. He sat right behind me in the clarinet choir - his playing is superb.

He talked at length about the Recitals, which were the only Selmers on display that I liked when I played them. Could have been the setups, but I just hated the Signatures (couldn't deal with the raised toneholes) and Odysees (mediocre intonation), but the Recitals - man, what lovely response, tone, intonation and projection. If I didn't already love my R-13s more, I'd be seriously tempted to play Recitals. They're different beasts, for sure.

FWIW, Jean-Francois played Signatures, but I think he could play the Poulenc on a cheeseburger and still sound great.

David -

Yeah, it's gawdjeuss. But you have to stand or sit on a bass stool to play it. Still, for that hunk of machinery, it would be worth it.

WW&BW http://www.wwbw.com/Selmer-41-BBb-Contra-Bass-Clarinet-i70824.music will FedEx it to you, so you can start playing with your new toy tomorrow -- a flat-out bargain at only $15,999.00, marked down from $23,500.00.

Best regards.

Oh.. I definately want that contra! When you buy one, pick one up for me too.

When I was buying my new clarinet in HS, my dad was convinced he was gonna buy me the rosewood contralto. I kind of had to tell him to stick with the professional Bb first, then he could have enough money left over to buy me a car. I don't think he could afford a rosewood contra. :P

Did you know you can special order rosewood bass clarinets from Selmer? I dunno if they go to low C, tho. So when I'm rich and famous, that's what I'm gonna order!

I have been playing on Recital clarinets for over 10 years and can openly say they are marvelous...the focus of tone and elastic response are preferable to me over Buffet clarinets in general...the only Buffet clarinets I use now are my set of Festival clarinets...
