Am curious if the 1010 is the top of the line for B & H? Am looking at one in a local pawn shop. They want $350. It needs re-pad and corks...
and theres a crack in the bell....other than that....good condition. Any thoughts? Thanks

It is indeed the top 'o the line --- it's also the biggest-bore production clarinet ever made (as far as I know). With a cracked bell and needing a complete overhaul, I would bargain some on the price, though.

I seem to remember that there were two different production runs of 1010's - one being more desirable than the other. I don't, however remember the details or have time at the moment to search. It is widely reported that unless you have a 1010 mouthpiece, playing will be difficult to tune. So that could add $100-250 to your purchase price unless the clarinet already has the proper mouthpiece.
I do think it would be a kick to play a 1010 for a while. Hope you can make a decent deal on it.

Many of the large-bore 1010s had an a dull, out of tune clarion F#. The newer 1010s incorporated the "Acton vent," which was an extra hole on the right side (looking down the instrument) of lower joint, attached to the right index finger ring, which solved that problem.
Modern makers of 1010-style clarinets (e.g., Eaton) have fixed the problem without using the Acton vent.
The pre-Acton 1010s are often said to be better than the newer ones, but most of them are worn out. Jack Brymer switched to the new model.
Assuming the bore hasn't been altered and the instrument can be put in good condition, $350 is a very low price. You will need a mouthpiece with a different chamber to play in tune, though. Eaton makes good ones, as does Pillinger.

Thanks for the info.....I knew I could rely on "sneezers" for what I needed.
I'm thinking I'll offer $200....this clarinet has been in "pawn" for nearly two years. Asking price to begin with was $795....dropped to $350......old man who runs the pawn is a good guy....has a lot of "history" in Phoenix...knew a bunch of Hollywooders back in the day....

Actually, Brymer only changed to the later version because he broke his 1930s B flat. But the second set sounded good.
I subscribe to the view that pre Actons were better, though I doubt very much it was the Acton vent that made the later ones worse.
