 Florida State?

I've heard that FSU has one of the top 10 music programs

Is that true?

How does it place against others like Oberlin , Rutgers, Indiana, etc?

Knowing quite a few people currently there, or planning to go there (for all instruments) I'd definetly place it in the top 10 for education, but I dunno about performance. The clarinet studio seems to be large, and I doubt that is a good thing for an individual. For a state school it's definetly excellent, but I'd probably rather go to Oberlin or Indiana.

well being a clarinetist at florida state i can tell you better than anyone whatever you'd like to know... we do rank pretty high up there and our faculty is amazing. We do in fact have a pretty large clarinet studio with very few performance majors. I find that it helps in giving you a pretty fair idea of how life is outside of a small conservatory, granted we're not as big as Indiana which from what i understand is extremely large. As far as placing against the other schools i guess it's all about what you're looking for. If you interested in education then i'd go to FSU hands down over the others if you're interested in performance i would definitely consider FSU but there might be other schools out there that offer the same thing that you might have a better mesh with. Both clarinet professors are wonderful teachers and performers. You would be exposed to both the traditional style of playing as well as the contemporary style fully loaded with extended clarinet techniques and the like. If clarinet study is your most important factor then most definitely check out FSU, outside of the periphereal classes and what not the clarinet studio will definitely keep you on your toes and i'm not just saying that because i'm in it... Feel free to email me with specific questions... cheers

My long-time friend at FSU, [mathematics prof.] plays in the Tallahassee Winds, excellent CD's TKS, Dan Oberlin, sure wish I could play that well, so may I add to Keil's comments. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

There are a lot of good music schools out there..

I've never really heard of FSU so I can't really judge. Oberlin and Indiana are good, they aren't amazing like perhaps you could say Eastman, U of M, Northwestern and USC would be.
