 Sanding Fibracell reeds
Author: leonardA

I bought a Fibracell reed that is a little too hard. On their web site they say that they don't recommend sanding them. Has anyone had success with sanding or otherwise adjusting Fibracell or other synthetic reeds?

Leonard,
Perhaps the heat produced by sanding friction would melt the plastic and make it useless. If you try it, please post your results since I have a Fibrecane that is a little too stiff as well.
Regards,
Hans

I've met a few students of Richard Hawkins in the past who has sanded legere reeds to fit their mouthpieces. Those setups were the best sounding synthetic setups I've tried.

I tried it once. Took too much off.....

Good luck.

Sanding the side of the reed to fit the rails is one thing; going at the larger surfaces will break the sealing layer - and the reed will unravel.

Does Fibracell allow exchanges?

What if you move the reed a little further DOWN the mouthpiece, so that it bends 'earlier'?

After a couple of encouraging responses and despite the fact the Fibracell says that they do not recommend sanding, I took one that wasn't playing well anyway and very lightly sanded it. It did improve and make it a player, so I guess you can do it, but I would go very lightly with it. Fibracell doesn't mention on their site that they allow exchanges, so I assume that they don't (as does Legere), but I might email them and ask.
Thanks for your responses. This board is always there when you need it.

I have run Fibracells through my Reed Wizard with good results. Turned a couple of duds into "20-wedding" reeds.
