Pick a number, then add one hour to fill out your W-4 forms.

More than that, Johnny G. -- all you can physically manage and stay in good health... plus extraordinary determination, outstanding social skills, good business sense and lots of influential contacts... for starters.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
Let me tell you a tale of two students on a no-names basis -- a fellow clarinetist at Northwestern a year younger than me who practiced tirelessly and with absolute determination, and ended up winning several orchestral positions (subsequently quit the business, but that is a whole other story). I also went to school with an oboist who was recruited by Ray Still who, to Mr. Still's great frustration, focused on everything but the instrument. The guy is such a natural talent that he could play football, follow a pre-med track and practice oh so rarely, and was a very accomplished player. Also now a working musician.
You practice as much as is necessary to fully exploit your god-given talent.

"You practice as much as is necessary to fully exploit your god-given talent."
Remembering that it is God-given but needs to be honed and tuned and exploited. When it ceases to be fun, of if you are no longer able to perform, you praise God and press on.

The entire question sounds like a good ploy for a federal research grant--or one of few subjects still unused to get that Ph.D.

My Uncle just retired from the Trumpet section of The Berliner. He use to say "If I miss one day of practice, I notice. If I miss two days, my standmate notices. If I miss three days the audience notices."

I don't want to put any additional pressure on you, and let your conscience be your guide. But remember, while you are sleeping, someone else is practicing! Think about that when you go to bed!

Interestingly, Martha Agerich reportedly survivies on minimal practise ... and she's a TOP CLASS performer ... just goes to show, this is not a measureable ... you do what you have to do.
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
