An odd/impossible query

Hello all!!!

My grandfather took clarinet lessons from the principal clarinetist in the Philidelphia Philharmonic circa 1939/40....could anyone point me in the right direction about who this clarinetist might be? Any help would be appreciated, as Papa cannot remember the mystery player's name.:)

Hi,

Off the top of my head, I believe that Bernard Portnoy might have been the principal clarinetist of the Philadelphia about that time. I do know that Shannon Thompson's dissertation would probably answer the question exactly though.

I believe that GBK has a copy of that wonderful piece of work. Hopefully, he can chime in and affirm my answer or provide the correct one. I think I'm pretty close though.

Wow, GBK...Thanks alot! I'll ask Papa tomorrow and let you know!:) If it's worth anything, Papa said whoever it was wasn't a very good teacher. He never taught him how to read music! (Papa was only 7 when he was taking lessons..for .50 cents an hour. I wish it were like that now. Boy, do I.:)
