 scary concerts!

Does anyone have tips for performing a concerto for the first time? I'm a high-school student who will be playing some Crusell with a semi-professional orchestra this week, and I'm not feeling well prepared even though I've been playing the piece for about a year. Advice anyone? [huh]

Get third party listeners in on your rehearsals who know what they're doing. The balance (particularly in larger orchestrations like Crussell) will be quite unlike what you're expecting.

Remember it's your interpretation, don't try and sound like a recording someone else has done.

It's a long piece, with you on show...you probably will make mistakes, but it's not that important, don't dwell on them.

Maybe you've already done this, but make sure you know the score as well as your own part so you aren't surprised by what the orchestra's doing and you know when something's wrong. And don't be afraid to tell the conductor if you want to do spots again, especially if it will make you feel more secure. Good luck!

The suggestion to know the score as well as you know the clarinet part is really important. That makes the most sense. It's also important to have a mentor assist one or more of your rehearsals.... an extra set of ears.

DO NOT play the piece the day before you perform. Let it go... let it rewind... you won't forget it... and you won't confuse it! Just play warm ups and fun things but not too long. Many people practice the piece the day of the performance and I believe that is a huge mistake... even to practice it the day before as I've mentioned (is a mistake).

And........ be sure you are picking the tempos... not the conductor. Sometimes they try to will their way... but you are the soloist. It's your call.

Best of Luck

If you have been practicing this for over a year, you probably know the work better than you think. Be prepared that when you reherse with the orchestra it will sound very different than with a piano. Try and talk to the conducter before the 1st rehersal to discuss tempo and any tricky transitional spots.

The most important thing, in my opinion, is to have fun and play the music. If you look and sound like you are having fun and making music the audience will warm right up to you. Try not to worry about the small stuff. If you make some mistakes, don't worry about it, you will be surprised how few if any people notice.

Good Luck!!!!!!
