He was a great clarinet player...his records with Mingus on Savoy are excellent.

John and David

I hate to admit I don't know this musician ... he's obviously highly regarded otherwise none of you'd have made a comment about his passing. Are his recordings readily available?

thanks

Thank you JJM! Tim Price posted a beautifully worded and heart-felt message about John LaPorta on the Sax On The Web Forum.

John LaPorta's extended composition Theme and Variations was reissued on CD last year. Truly, it's a study in jazz composition. It's also a treat to hear the intensity of John's alto playing on that recording. Another MUST HEAR is the Sandole Brothers recording that was reissued on CD a couple of years ago. John has some wonderful solos. Plus, it's a mind opener to hear what Dennis Sandole was writing in the mid-50's. The final 3 or 4 tracks on the Sandole Brothers CD were taken from The Clarinet Artistry of John LaPorta recording. It features John in a trio setting. That is clarinet playing!

John LaPorta is at the top of my long list of clarinet heros. Truly, I think of him every time I open my clarinet case.

Best Wishes, Roger

I will always love the way LaPorta played on Mingus Jazz workshop lps on Savoy...it way an incredible sound and phrasing that went beyond syles...such intensity and warmth of tone at the same time!

Hi,

But don't forget the terrific impact John LaPorta had as a member of the faculty at Berklee. A major force in jazz education.
