Last post on the old thread was May 6th.
In a recent message, Tom told me that they expect to have a low C bass clarinet out in June. He did not indicate a price.
I added a request on the bass clarinet bulletin board to see if anyone in Texas could give a report, but no takers yet. It would be nice to have an independant report. Dallas it a little far for me to travel. Anyone try one yet?

Here's an unsolicited speculation: Ridenour's low-Eb bass clarinet is currently sold by Brook Mays for a about $1100 US. Having personally fabricated (from scraps and junk parts) a low-C extension for my own bass clarinet, I can tell you that adding a proper, working extension to his existing instrument should not cost more than $500 unless I'm way off base. So, are you (like me) salivating at the prospect of a decent, double-register-vent low-C bass clarinet for around $1600? <sounds of drooling.....>

Yeah, I'm drooling too. If these instruments really pan out I'm going to have to have one. Probably the low Eb bass since I currently own a low C Selmer.

Robert, out of curiosity, why you want a student model plastic bass clarinet if you already have a professional model (I assume) Selmer bass clarinet?

Gee Whiz Jack, I'd guess Roberts reason would be for "marching in the rain with the band." Except the bell fills up!

My low C Selmer is a great horn but I got so much money in it that I don't like to take it out of the house. A decent playing inexpensive bass would be better for big band gigs (I play bari sax in a couple of bands), setting in with other bands, jam sessions, etc. I try to stay away from marching bands.

I'll be in Texas this summer, and planned on dropping by Brook Mays anyway at one point, since I have relatives in Dallas. I'm not sure whether or not I'll buy one, I suppose it depends on how good my trial of the instrument goes, but regardless of whether I buy it or not, I'll be sure to let you guys know how it sounds.
