I've recently started playing a wonderful Greg Smith #1 facing. I'm using VD V12 3.5 reeds. They seem a bit soft, so I'm blowing in some no.4 reeds. I was wondering which reeds other players use on Greg Smith's mouthpieces? I also saw on his website that he sells a device which gives reeds the profile of the old Morré reeds. Would the new VD 56 reeds be better for Greg's Smith's mouthpieces? I tried some 3.5, but they were too soft.

IMMSMR, Greg Smith recommends 3.5 to 4. So you are certainly in the ballpark on reed strength. My daughter & I both play GS #1 & she uses an FOF 3.75 and I use V-12 3.5 & FOF 3.5's. I tried the Vandoren 56 Rue LePic & personally "I didn't get it". They were no horrible & that also doesn't mean they won't work for someone else. However, I buy my FOF's from The Doctor for much less than the $24-28 a pop for the 56's.

I played a Smith 1* for several years with V12 4's. Worked great for me- popular setup...

I play alot professionally and find my Hite facing(which is fairly close to a Smith #1 in terms of increments)
and have no trouble getting No. 4 Grey box Vandoren to work just fine....
however I use a very slow break in period and tend to rotate the first few reeds out of a box on the first days of practice with them.
the new Rue le Pic reeds are somewhat of a dissapointment to players using american style facings...this seems to be a bit of the concensus...it may have alot to do with long facing mouthpieces...

I've been using a Greg Smith 1++ mouthpiece since the beginning of this year. I mainly use V12 4's, FOF 3.75's and 4's, and Gonzalez Regular Cut 4's. I've also had some success with Grand Concert Evolution 4's recently.
