Hey, welcome, though I'm only a few posts and a couple days older than you. I'm also a high schooler, so I have at least one thing in common with you besides what you mentioned for everyone.

Hi, there.
Things I can tell you about this board are (though it's been only several months that I frequent this board):
- VERY helpful in your clarinet playing
- many kind pros and amateurs to answer your questions. But there certainly are some rules...
- seen by many people from many places
- age : maybe all ages?

To answer your question about high school practice, although it has been almost 50 yrs since I was a freshman, I remember that during the school year, I practiced about 2 hrs a day after getting off the bus and before supper (that's midwestern for lunch). However, during the summer months, I would practice at least four hrs daily (in 2 hrs segment, morning and afternoon) in addition to playing evening concerts with numerous local adult bands. To me, it wasn't "got to do it", boring practice--playing clarinet was just plain "fun". I must confess that my earl goals were simply, "higher, louder and faster". But also, "in there, somewhere, was "better". However, the practicing and concertizing were all a result of the "fun factor" in playing music, and in particular, clarinet.
And, although I do not practice nearly as much as I used to (or should), playing music is still just plain fun (which I often now get paid for). What could be better???
Welcome to this BB--we are all ages, both genders, from almost every country in the world, but have basically one thing is common......the clarinet. As our "gatekeeper" GBK suggested, please read the rules and then join in our friendly exchange of ideas, new and old (and in my case, often VERY old). Have fun--that's where it's at.

Hi and Welcome, MKYB, as usual, Wm and GBK say it Very Well. You have found the best-informed, friendly web-site on the 'net! To answer your 1st [??] question, I KNOW I didn't praactice enough in high school band/orch etc, it seemed that the good things of life, Sciences, Scouts and Girls, likely interfered with any thots of a musical career. Ah, to live it again ! Ask again, and get acquainted with our good group. Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

In high school, the answer for me was "not nearly enough." That said, I probably practiced more than most of the other clarinetists. I plateaued pretty quickly and began to equate good technique with "I can play all the notes fast enough." I thought I played pretty well. Five years later, I can't believe I ever thought that's all there was.

In high school? I was in the band room literally half the day during Grades 11 and 12. Every study hall, and then band class. The teachers knew where to find me. I was a late starter but made up for lost time. There wasn't a lot of time to practice at home. School was vacation for me; at home there were chores, weeding that huge garden, cooking... But school was a grand time, lots of time to delve into the band library and pull out parts that looked interesting. Math, Science, English and Spanish were easy but the Chemistry teacher bent the rules a little when I was late for class. Always in the band room!

I spent an awful lot of time in High School practicing...the teachers were driven nuts by the amount of time I spent in the music practice rooms!!!
