Weiner Music sells sets of Buffet Blue Steel Springs & so does Jeanne'. Seems like the price was $25-30 + shipping for the pre-packaged set. These are Buffet product & come in trademark plastic bag. Muncy sells pads sets, so I would guess they, too, might have something. Do you know how to install springs?

I have never bought Springs in this manner. As I recall, Jeanne' does not sell prepackaged Buffet Blue Steel Springs, but rather just packages them. I am sure you could contact Jeanne' and they could tell you.

Have you considered the SPRING TOOLS that you should have on hand to fully undertake the job? Installation of Springs seldoms works out as one might envision or expect.

My experience:
1. Springs seldom break the way you want them too - that is NO good ole easy out with the old & easy in with the new!

2. Good Spring Installation Tools are expensive - darned expensive.

3. It really helps to have a Teacher. That's not to say that you have tio have a Teacher. BUT, having a Teacher will get you up to speed far sooner with proper installation.

What do you know of Posts? Frankly, to properly deal with Spring problems, you better know how to work with posts, too. IMO, that is. Perhaps Gordon or JB will respond on your proposed undertaking.

Good luck.

Buffet Springs

I vacationed there once with the family. Loved the waterfall and the naturally bubbling hot tub. The food at BuffetSprings Resort however left a lot to be desired.....

I agree, mw. Spring replacement is sometimes straight-forward, but it is also often a can of worms, where all manner of specialized equipment smooths the rescue.

Yes, by all means wear at least safety glasses....if not a face shield. When you cut springs with "nippers" the pieces can fly all over the place.

I know that some technicians automatically replace all springs at overhaul - others only as needed. Why are springs sometimes totally replaced?

From what I have seen, when there has been a total spring replacement, it is generally a 'botched-up' job in at least some way. This suggests that on the whole, it is the don't-know-how-much-they-don't-know (to put it politely)technicians who do total replacements. Of course this is not ALWAYS the case.

If it aint broke, don't fix it! The chances are that if a spring is not rusted near the base, and has functioned for a good few years, it will last just as long as any replacement. And certainly longer than many of the currently-available, over-brittle springs.

Fred, I can only talk from my experience. I have very rarely heard or seen of total spring replacement. Even when all the posts are removed from the clarinet for (a very thorough) replating job (& lets remember that posts seldom are replated) - I have seen the best & most knowledgable Techs number the spring locations for later spring re-insertion..

IMO, total replacement of Springs is RARE, and rarely called for. On that note, smoke may have been blown up the derrieres of the populace - perhaps the replacement of a few springs turns into a Paul Bunyan story.

Some (Master) Techs like John Butler will return the original blue steel springs in a plastic bag after replacement - particularly when most all were just fine. Right, JB ? :)

Gordon, is correct - there are many surprises that can pop up upon a total replacement. Posts which may not have been loose, can become loose in the process. AND, there are many schools of thought on how to solve the dilemma of the loose post. The post must be secure to allow the sptring to do it's proper job.

BTW: Gordon, was 100% "spot on" - if it ain't broke don't fix it - don't go looking for work or trouble.

Musicmedic possibly sells individual diameters.
I don't know Weiner.
Most suppliers accept a minimum order of a dozen or so of each diameter.

I'm going to order a set of springs for Dain, no problem. MW, yes, I always return unbroken and rust free springs--both flat and round--to the customer in case they may need one for emergency purposes. (Just like I always keep my old fan belts for my truck....just in case one breaks on a trip.)
Later...
