Anyone know where I can find an inexpensive Ab soprano clarinet? Also, how do you create vabrato on the clarinet? It seems impossible.

Thanx!

If you search the Bulletin Board archives for vibrato, you will find many discussions (none really leading anywhere). Consensus, by the way, seems to be that Clarinet vibrato is generally inappropriate.

As for how to do it, several players have described different techniques: embouchure changes, pharynx movements, diaphragm/abs motions. Some have said something like, "Yeah, I can do it, but I'm not sure how." Perhaps it's like wiggling your erars... you either do it naturally, or it's very hard to learn how to do it well at all.

Irrelevant information: Thomas Edison, who had very poor hearing, disliked vibrato of a female voice. He actually worked on a restraining chair designed to prevent women's vibrato. Perhaps someone finally told him it wasn't an accident.

John

I must respectfully disagree with the above statement:
"Consensus, by the way, seems to be that Clarinet vibrato is generally inappropriate. "

There is no "consensus" on this issue.

For some it is appropriate, for others, it is not not.

There is some very good advice here in the archives on HOW to produce vibrato in different manners: lip; lip/jaw; diaphragmatic; combination of the above, etc.

Vibrato is not impossible; it is quite easy to produce on a basic level. To control it and use it for musical purposes is another issue.

On certain types of clarinet, vibrato is easier to do. I can do some great things with the contra, but it would just be wasted time for the soprano. Maybe it's just me.
