Wow...I'm soooo sad for him. I knew him while I was at Oberlin and he was working on the Artist Diploma there. He is one of the absolutely sweetest and nicest guys there is.

I wonder if the disorder is actually more common , but only musicians , due to the required hand/ finger dexterity, would be so aware of the onset of the symptoms?

I followed the link to the part about Botox injection in the brain....(re Leon Fleischer) . But I thought that botulism toxin worked at the nerve-muscle junction. Any other info. out their?
If I come up with anything else on a Medline search I will post it.
BTW I strongly suggest a listen to Alex Kein's Bach recording. My teacher (whose* SO is oboist) had me listen to it....astounding.

ON A MORE SERIOUS NOTE...SOME LITERATURE ABOUT FOCAL DySTONIA
A brief medline search yield these tidbits:
Apparently there are some new findings incriminating a disorder in the gene that transcribes for a dopamine neuro receptor.
Botulism toxin has been injected in the muscles that are involved...BUT...resistance to therapy can occur due to the development of antibodies. I did not come up with any intracranial injection data.
Another finding is an overexcitement of the involved cortex (brain) from SENSORY input which results in an {overfiring} of the elicited motor response.
Also GABA changes have been noted on MRIstudies
