I would like to mention the Peter Spriggs "Floating Rail" clarinet ligature. It's really a fine and original ligature which has never failed to amaze any of my students or colleagues who have tried it. I suggest that those of you who are looking for an extremely responsive set-up give the Spriggs ligature a try. You can find him at:

Thanks for your attention. ET

It'd be better if you look for him at http://www.pspriggs.com. Peter is a sponsor of (and is hosted at) Sneezy.Org . I play his ligature and highly recommend people give it a try.

I second this message. I have been using Peter's ligature since i tried them at the Oklahoma Symposium back in June. They're the next best thing to the Kaspar ligatures that i've played on.

I would hope he can improve the look of the
cap that comes with it. look is important too
although sound is the first thing to consider

I believe all the cap is, is a vito cap with a cut made with a box cutter so that it will stretch a little more. Doesn't fit very well for me so i just don't use it.

Joe,
I really don't care about the cap at all - no one's looking at it while I'm playing!

If I were to have a special cap made I would have to charge 4 times as much for the ligature, I think most would rather have their playing improved, no matter what the cap looks like, as long as the price is reasonable! For those that are leaving the cap off, I don't think you are aware of the reasons one should leave it on at all times when not plying for any more than just a few bars. This applies to all caps, not just mine!

I have to vote with the yeas on the Spriggs ligature also. When I got mine, I tried it and never went back to anything else. My only problem now is where to store all those inferior ligatures! Spriggs has made a really great ligature.

Has anyone been able to compare a Spriggs lg to a Winslow?? Resonance, response, etc. (they are both about the same price)

My teacher uses a Winslow. For my clarinet the Spriggs works better for the tone, equivalent for the articulation (though I'm no great shakes in either category!).
YMMV

does the floating rail ligature fit zinner blank's
shape? is it a custom hand made ligature or just
manufactured at standard dimension everytime?

I use the Spriggs ligature on a Hawkins mouthpiece, which is made from a Zinner blank abd it fits just fine. However - Zinner makes different style blanks, and I don't know which style Richard uses/used.

Although I am a novice learner, I have and love Peter's floating rails ligature. Like a few others I have not been using the cap much. I assumed it is meant to protect the mouthpiece end from damage. If I am wrong, can Peter please put us right?
Karel.

To answer Karel: You are right that it would protect the end of the mouthpiece from damage and of course the reed also. However, as a professional clarinetist,I can't remember the last time that I hit the mouthpiece end of the clarinet against anything. The main reason I would keep the cap on as much as possible would be to keep the reed from starting to dry out. Even just starting to dry out will adversly affect the way it plays the next moment you need to play. Keeping the cap on as much as possible gives me as few surprises as possible when I am performing. I need to be in control!

Peter, I just looked to see if you have had a US patent issued on your lig design, no luck, I trust you have filed since it looks like a winner! Don

Just about any ligature i've played has beat out the Winslow on soprano clarinet (except for the completely non-metal ligs). The Spriggs adds alot more ping to my sound. Sounds like it throws my sound to the back of the hall without even trying. The Winslow on soprano feels like it just makes my super high notes easier. Dead sound, quick response though. I prefer the Winslow on everything from alto sax to bigger reeds.

That's a touch call. The only three Kaspar ligs i've played have been very nice as well. If i had the choice i'd go with both a Spriggs and a Kaspar. But being that i can't find a Kaspar for any less than $115, i have to go with the Spriggs.
