 Mouthpiece for Leblanc LL
Author: Bill_D

I believe the LL is considered a large bore (.582) horn.

I'm using a Fobes 2M* mpc which works very well with the LL. I have a Fobes Debut, Gregory Smith, and several other mpcs that work well on my R13, but not on the LL.

I'd prefer a symmetric mpc. What should I look for in a mpc for a large bore horn?

Bill

I think Clark could help you out, there.

Dollars getsya donuts that he can take a 2M* and tweak it for the LL.

I would be interested in making small adjustments between horns...

Interesting question. I am having some success with a B40 on my LL. I am very curious about the Morgan mouthpieces. A lot of large bore selmer players like the Morgan RM 15.

I prefer a Symmetric facing, too. I play a Smith 1 with V-12 3.5's & that setup has played beautifully with 2 LL's I have on hand and several I have sold in the last year.

The R13 Bore is going to run .575 to .578 . The Leblanc LL at .582 just isn't that much bigger in bore size, IMO.

I say check the LL out, I don't think it is your mouthpiece - at least it hasn't been for me. Pads & key heights. Maybe I am all wet - but I would go there first. Too many times we think we are getting good seals, etc when you could drive an army through the leak. As a mentor once told me, a monkey can make a clarinet bottom joint play - a master gets it to seal with a "real pop" and stay that way through a repair cycle.

If you have an "unusual" LL which is measuring to Pete Fountain-like-meaurements - that might explain it. There have been reports of differing measurements on Leblancs. BUT ...

mw,

I have a Smith 1. I tried it with a V-12 3.5, and it's much better. Also, tried 5RV Lyre 13 with my usual weaker reed, and it plays well too. So, there's hope. So far I like the Fobes 2M* best with the LL, and the Smith best with the R-13.

You know, I was wondering what reed you were using. I was reviewing my notes as I remember I had a Fobes at one time. It was kind of a stuffy facing for me - of course many rave about it. Clark is a master at many things clarinet.

Bill D:

Sorry, I can´t help you out...

Could someone shed some light. Is the LL considered a pro clarinet? Are they expensive? I have never tried one or heard someone playing one. I have noticed that some are still playing them...obviously, Leblanc doesn´t make them anymore.

Yes, the LL is a professional clarinet named for (L)eon (L)eblanc. It is the Model 1176 in Leblanc catalogues, literature & their website.
