Has anyone heard of any new products that would assist with 'silent practicing'? There seem to be all sorts of 'faux' instruments that assist with brass and strings, but nothing for the woodwind (yet). What do the rest of you do about practicing?? *I have access to an indoor practice facility anytime (bandshell) but if I want to practice at home, I have to practice in 'muted' tones, and never get the true sound I need/want because small space available....

for brass horns there's a silent mute that connects to a midi. it advertises that it doesn't change the sound, or have any backpressure, and is quiet to the room. is silent mute a double descriptor? anyway it exists.

There are no silent practicing devices for woodwinds because, by the nature of how the instruments work, it would be technically much more complex to pull off than it is for strings, percussion and even brass. For example, with stringed instruments, you can simply get rid of the sounding chamber and add an electronic pickup. Percussion simulators simply need something to beat on and the electronics to translate those beats into sounds. Brass instruments can be muted with a pickup or microphone in the mute. But in woodwinds, the majority of the sound comes out the toneholes making a mute impossible. A woodwind device would need to muffle the sound created by the reed while, at the same time, react to the vibrations to reproduce electronically the interaction of your embouchure, your blowing and your fingering. An accurate practice device should even be able to simulate overblowing, squeaks and missed fingerings.
Hmm... Doesn't someone produce a padded bag one can play one's clarinet into? So much simpler. If necessary, one could stick a pickup mike in the bag and hook it up to an amplifier and headphones.

I seem to remember seeing some midi controller device by yamaha which imitates woodwind instruments... wonder how that works...

You might try googling terms like "Practice Room" or "Practdice Booth". You can build these inside your apartment. I've never tried it, but if you do please let us know how it works.

Buy one of the great Red Telephone Booths that the Brits are getting rid of and soundproof it. Great conversation piece and a hiding place from the "trouble and strife" when things get hot.
