 M13 and BP03 Mouthpiece Comparison
Author: Pappy
Date:   2004-04-26 14:22

Hi All,

First, this is a great bboard. Have been lurking for a while.

So, for my inaugural post: Does anybody have some opinions "comparing and contrasting" the Portnoy BP03 with the Vandoren M13? I own a BP02 and a Kaspar (a 'Michigan" Kaspar originally made for my father). Both serve me well. But since the Kaspar was made for someone other than me, I feel I may be fighting mouthpiece/reed combination issues that I needn't be. I played a BP03 years ago and recall that it focused better and provided more resistance (though I may be remembering this wrong). I play an R13 Bb and a Selmer A. I know there are other mouthpieces out there. But I'm working under the assumption that too many choices will lead to no choice.

Thanks!

You're on the right track...

Get another BP03 - if it plays well fogedaboudit (and go play)!

The M13 and the BPO3 are at 2 different ends of the mouthpiece spectrum.

Just looking at the tip openings alone:

The M13 has a tip opening of 1.005mm (.0395")

The BPO3 has a tip opening of 1.21 mm (.048") ...GBK

Ah, see. I didn't look at that. Thanks for that!

The M13 Vandoren has always been something of a dissapointment to me..they have a tendency to play stuffy and also have a very restricted tonal spectrum...however, the Portnoy facings 03 is pretty open and very lively...

Remember you are comparing two very different beasts in some regards..the B Portnoy's are famous for being flexible...whereas the Vandoren M13s are very strict copies of Chedeville's ...but not great copies.

Thanks All!

Now last night, I had one of those fickle Mouthpiece/reed nights. I found a reed that just SANG on my Kaspar. Not really interested in a collection of mouthpieces, so I'm probably looking for an excuse not to add another. But the BP02 is just TOO free, so I'll keep playing with it.

Pappy,

I have played a BP02 for about 30 years (I have not let anyone touch it for even the slightest refacing). It still plays great and although I have two spares, the original one is still the #1 MP.

I have two Stowell Wells Schneider 2s that are very good but not as reed friendly as the BP02. Also, the Buffet C and C Crown as well as the older VD 2RV seems to allow me to use many of the same reeds so I would suspect the facing and tip are somewhat similar.

These are the only MPs that I have found that allow me to transition pretty easily. I have not tried any newer classics from the Smith, Morgan, or VD line except a 5RVLyre.

PS I have a perfect BP03 that I might trade you for something (maybe the Kaspar) :-).
