I recently read a great article on mentors. It said that one side of the creative process is solitude, an 'inner space' in which you create, and the other is among like-minded artists, someone you can always go back to when you hit a brick wall (Not literally!), or when you run out of inspiration etc.
What stumps me now is... Who's MY mentor? If it's such a key ingredient for success, where's mine? And how could I benefit from having a mentor in my life? How do you choose one? Does one just come along? I know that for most, it's their teacher, but I don't think I have that kind of relationship with mine.
Someone, anyone, tell me more, tell me what you know!

How do you identify your mentor? Ask yourself: Who do you enjoy talking to? Who do you go to when you have questions? Who are you comfortable with? Above all, who do you trust? Answer these questions and you'll have a list of people. Now answer them musically & you'll have your musical mentor(s). Note that your mentors will change as your experiences & goals change & adapt. As far as being a key ingredient, the idea of mentoring is sort a new concept. What it really means is having trusting confidents who will guide you down your chosen path. That's as old as the world.
I have the feeling you are looking for people to answer your questions. A mentor will help guide you. Unfortunately for you, he can't give you the answers. That's entirely up to you. With all that said, I'd ask you to identify for yourself what's important in life. Is it money? Is it happiness? World peace & harmony? Being part of the group? Where do you fit in? Answer these truthfully and you'll start answering your own questions.

I had always assumed it was just luck. I've had alot of teachers over the years... some became like a second father others made me want to quit... but the one's that were like a second father always had a common thing... they cared about my progress and i felt i could ask them about musical and life questions... my experience is that your mentor in music can often become your mentor in life as well... you just have to find one and stick with him/her
