We have a gig we play on friday nights for two hours. There is a clarinet player, drums, electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitar, keyboard and several vocalists. We are using Galaxy stand monitors for the instrument players and Community floor monitors for the vocalists. With all this sound on stage, the loudest is the clarinet! That guy can overwhelm and cut through everything.
Any suggestions on lowering his volume on stage? We've told him and told him, but he doesn't seem to be able to remember that the rest of us need to hear ourselves too.

If he can't remember how to blend after repeatedly being reminded at practice sessions, then a new player is indicated ...

Get him to start smoking. He'll get lung cancer and his breath capacity will probably be cut in half, then he can't blow as hard through phrases and thus he'll be unable to play loudly. A bit vicious, but I'm sure that you're absolutely fed up with him by now just b/c of his monitor volume...

Why don't you just turn down his vol. control yourself? Ask the leader of your outfit to do this unless it's HIM. The only other thing, would be to do a ""Chris Barber"" on him.
Hey ask me about CB unless you happen to be a British jazz fan !

Well.......way back in the 50's a noted British trumpet player, by name of Ken Colyer, had a successful band in the New Orleans mould, which included Chris Barber on trombone.
There was a difference of musicial opinion between them as Colyer was unshakeable in his drive to play pure NO style (a fine ambition) but Barber wanted a different direction so.............Barber packed his trombone and took the WHOLE band minus Colyer and created the Chris Barber JB......and became very popular and made heaps of dough in the process. Ken Colyer went his own way and was very successful and well respected as well.
So.......if this bloke is unshakeable in his determination to dominate the band........you can leave and take the others with you. You might even win.
