Is the low Eb on alto clarinet considered standard equipment these days? How long has it been standard equipment?

Yes, as with the bass, quite standard. I will dig out my old [open-hole] 1920's? Conn alto to check. I do have a 1940's Conn bass with low E only! but still a good player. In my experience with community band music I've seen only a very few Eb s, so it appears to be a "carry-over" from the Full Boehm as many modern altos and basses also have the artic. C#/G# and alternate Ab/Eb as well. Don

Whenever I've played alto, that low Eb key comes in handy. During rests, I would frequently transpose the bass clarinet parts, and I got my pinky workout doing so! Other than that, I haven't played too many low Eb's written for Alto. Of course, many composers don't include alto parts. It's a real shame because that instrument is so gorgeous when played correctly!
