Though I've heard many of Shifrin's recordings on CD, radio, and video, tonight was the first chance I've gotten to see him play in person, at his Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's concert in Alice Tully Hall.
The piece was the Poulenc sonata with Charles Wadsworth at the piano. The performance, of course, was spetacular. Shifrin was every bit the hype I've heard.
He played with an extraordinarily warm tone, surpassing all those recordings I've heard. I found his throat and low clarion notes at several times to be a bit airy and leeking, though his chalumeau notes were music heaven each and every time. His tone was very consistent throughout.
It appeared to be a Rossi clarinet that he played on. I was in the back of the hall and couldn't clearly see the instrument, but the bell looked red with the rings from the wood.
A memorable night, one of the finest performances by a clarinetist I have seen.

David Shifrin uses Buffet R13 clarinets, with bells and barrels made by Morrie Backun. This is something new that he has been trying, but his clarinets and mouthpieces have not changed in years. His mouthpiece is an old Kanter.

The Morrie Backun bells and barrels are a dream. I'm in the process of trying to acquire a set for myself. They're a bit pricy, but from what I've tried on my teacher's, they're well worth it.

I'm a fan of Mr. Shifrin and hope to hear him live one day as well. Thank you for telling us all about hearing him.
If I might add, only because I remember, Charles Wadsworth was the pianist with Beverly Sills and Gervase DePeyer on an LP I have of Schubert's "Shepherd On the Rock" That recording was made some time ago (60's?).
