 adjustable thumb

I have an adjustable thumb rest. I have moved it around looking for a comfortable level, but I want to know if there is a more objective criterion I should be using?

Comfort IS the criterion. It should be the position that creates the least tension in your hand.

I have found that the usual maker's position is too low for my hand's comfort, and in particular gives me difficulty in rapidly reaching the right little finger low E/B key without pulling my ring finger away from the lower tone hole with either a squeek or nothing! So without resorting to an adjustable, I invert the T R and use a rubber "cushion" to accommodate the curvature. Simple, works for me! Don

The question is: which TRs will adjust sideways as well as up and down, correct? The ones I've seen, all of them, will allow a *little* lateral adjustment, not a lot. You might have to resort to thicker cork, then 'adjust' by sanding it down to an angle that better suits your hand position.

This must be a common problem. Why do they put them so low
that your thumb is almost under your middle finger. I took the thumb rest off my old Revere and reversed it. This was kind of uncomfortable so I made one out of stainless. I had to do the same thing on my LeBlanc 1611. I don't like the idea of drilling new holes for an adjustable rest.

I actually had the opposite problem with my bass clarinet (buffet).. the thumb rest was too high (it is an adjustable one) and it was very uncomfortable if I used it so I had cork put on it to lower it further (about an inch or and inch and a half).. ;-)
