 Chipped O'Brien Crystal Mouthpiece
Author: joevacc

I have what seems to be a good O'Brien crystal mouthpiece. The Problem with it is a chip dead center on the tip of the beak. Can this sort of damage be repaired, or is it wall art now?

What say ye?

Thanks, JV

Likely there are a number of refacers who will work on crystal/glass mps, including ?most? of our recent mp-question-knowledgable responder/posters. Having had Manfredo Cavallini, Italy, [believe he is now a BB sponsor { not at the moment - Mark C. }, I have his URL, if asked for] reface a "virgin" O'Brien to a very playable 5RVL, I sent him a wind-cut-table-chipped, epoxy-filled O'B, expecting only a slight reface to a recent Pomarico jazz facing. Instead, he removed the chip !!, refaced and I am very happy with the result. I'd suggest your contacting him to see if he wishes to take on another "severe" challenge. Have been busy checking out better/best mps for several "big bore" sop cls. Most of the glasses are quite large. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Hi Don,

because of damaging my Pomarico last week, I'm really interested in getting in contact with this italian guy. Do you have any more details on how to get in contact with him?

Hi Haegar [and Joe V] : Guess I was wrong about Manfredo Cavallini [in a Rome ?suburb?] yet being a sponsor, but he is contactable via "ZADIGNABLA@Yahoo.IT", and quite fluent in English, far better than my Italian ! For anyone interested, several years ago he thread-posted on our BBoard seeking info on O'Brien and an old LeBlanc article on glass mps, which I just happened to have. Sending that info to him began a very pleasant, productive friendship. My very old O'Brien sop. mp tube has now made 4 trips across the Atlantic with no damage! IMHO, he is an Expert! Much Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Thank you Don for the info!

I was hoping one of our mouthpiece gurus would chime in.

With the glass in particular I am skeptical of someone being able to replace missing material. Cutting the m/p back to get pass the chip would have drastic effect I would think. ?

I am sort of answering my own question but am hoping that I am wrong!

Has anyone ever tried to repair a crystal mouthpiece? What was the outcome?

I've repaired a couple using slow-setting clear epoxy, followed by refacing as necessary to blend the repair. My own Bb clarinet mouthpiece is one of the two, has held up for about 4 months so far --- the other was done for a customer a few months ago, no report back on it. So while I have a method, I have no data on the longevity of the repair. And because the epoxy has to fill the chip with a bit extra to allow for shrinkage, there is at least a minimal amount of refacing needed afterwards. By the way, the area to be filled has to be cleaned with acetone immediately prior, to ensure a good bond.

I've done likewise, and it lasted well, but that would depend on the nature of the chip.

If the shape of the hole was inappropriate for good adhesion, then I would improve it, by grinding with a rotary diamond burr, in the same manner that a dentist prepares a cavity for filling.
