 Dvorak 7 Clarinet Parts.

Does anyone know Dvorak's 7th symphony very well?

I'm talking Dvorak 7 on the up-to-date numbers...not the old weird ones, so I don't mean the New World.

I've never played it...and I don't think I've even heard it.

Playing it before very long...does it have a nice principal clarinet part?

Dan.

I've never performed it, so I can't give an informed opinion on the clari parts. From listening, there are some very nice sections for clarinet, especially in the 1st mvt. The opening of the 2nd mvt is a little reminiscent of the Brahms 3rd symphony.

As a piece of music, I think the seventh is his best symphony. If performed with a "sense of occasion", a bit of dramatic power, it towers over the rest.

Dvorak Symphony #7 (the old #2) Op.70 has some beautiful solo clarinet passages as well lyrical clarinet duets in thirds and sixths with the second clarinetist.

Make sure your tuning is precise with both A and Bb clarinets ...GBK

Thanks to both of you...

Let's just be 100% clear...Dvorak 7 op. 70, is in D minor?

The numbering is so confusing!

Dan.

Yes

The Dvorak symphonies are now numbered in the order they were written. However, only five of Dvorak’s symphonies were published in his lifetime, but four more are dated from his earlier years, making a total of nine. The well-known five are now numbered as 5-6-7-8-9 (corresponding to a former publishing order of 3-1-2-4-5): thus the Seventh was long known as No. 2, and the New World is No. 9. The numbering 1-4 has now been reassigned to his youthful symphonies.

If Dvorak had the symphonies published in a timely manner, it wouldn't have been such a mess...GBK

I played Dvorak 7 a few weeks back in a repertoire session at my music college. Its really tricky! Lots of difficult rhythms etc, but it has some really beautiful moments.

The LSO & Sir Colin Davis have a wonderful recording on the LSO Live label.

Difficult 1st clarinet part. Requires solid fundamentals. Must play difficult solo to open the 2nd movement on a cold bflat clarinet + this passage crosses the break about a dozen times (or so it seems) which makes pitch a double concern. Last movement has some tough spots. Solid rhythm and time important in all movements.

Robert Marcellus recorded this with George Szell and, as far as I am concerned, that recording is about as good as you can play.
