Are the register on all Buffet bass clarinets aas bad as the one on mine? When I first got it it didn't work and now that I've had it worked on it only works about half of the time. It is a Buffet Professional model and was made in 1971.

J.,
Could you be more specific as to what part of the register is causing you problems. I recently purchased a Buffet Model 1193 and have had no problems whatsoever. In my opinion it is an excellent horn.

Well when I first got it it wouldn't work at all. I'd hit the register key and nothing would happen. Then I got it worked on to the tune of $65.00. Now that it has been worked on it can only go up to F before it slips back down into the low register. I'm probably going to have this horn overhauled in early Febuary by Thomas Ohme and hopefully he can get the register fixed.

I have a model 1183 (to low Eb) which I purchased new in 1993. I had some difficulties with the register key ( on the neck portion) but I took it to an excellent repair man who was able to adjust the mechanism. Make sure you take the instrument to someone who specializes in clarinets... Tim Burdick in Cleveland is supurb and rather inexpensive, compared to Tim Clark in Columbus... better work too...

I think your problem is that you have an old horn that has been neglected. You will need a "clarinet" repairman, one who has proficiency both on the horn and in his repair trade. The Buffets are excellent instruments that when cared for properly and maintained and adjusted regularly, will perform as intended. Your repairman should play the instrument for you and demonstrate the entire range of the horn at all volume levels. You should then play for him and check the work. If there is a discrepancy, it will be apparent at that time. He will then make any additional adjustments. That is how it works. You have an equal responsibility in the repair process.
I bought a Buffet 1193 a little over two years ago, and have only needed a couple of minor adjustments in that time. It is far more stable than I ever imagined for a horn of that complexity.
