 Artie Shaw Clarinet Method Book
Author: hans
Date:   2004-04-07 01:06

This book is no longer available and I haven't seen this information elsewhere, so I thought this might be of interest to some readers.

The last 40 pages of the "Method" book are duplicated in Shaw's Jazz Technic Books (Book One and Book Two) and these last two books are still readily available (and cheap).

For those who may be wondering what is in the first 37 pages of the out of print "Method" book, they contain:
introductory comments by Shaw
some beginner tips;e.g., (in case you're wondering) he advises "upper teeth are placed lightly on the mouthpiece", and avoid the open mouthpiece-soft reed combination.
simple C scales
intervals
thirds
fourths
fifths
sixths
a section on tonguing and staccato with exercises
chromatic scales
minor scales

I would be happy to reply to emails if anyone wants more detailed information about the "out of print" material.

Don,
I ordered the Jazz Technic books 1 and 2 through my local music store but I found them here as well:

my copy of this book omits pages 16 to 33 but repeats 33 to 48.... a big pain. i'd love it if someone offered to send me the missing pages!!!! (hint hint hint). there are some good exercises- esp pages 7 to 10 used for intonation/even sound around the break etc.
one thing that is odd- on page 3 he discusses how to achieve a "clean attack", but defines it by describing how the tounge will "stop the flow of air" and "stop the vibration of the reed". Ummmm, attack is about STARTING both these things, isn't it?
but i'm being picky, i know.
