I have an August Buffet Albert System clarinet that I would like to get some information on. The horn is 27" long from the tip of the mouthpiece to the bottom of the bell. It's made of dark wood (probably ebony). There is no serial number on the horn, but each piece (except the barrel & MP) are marked:
Harp Logo
August
Buffet
Paris
Star Logo
Brevete
S.G.D.G.
The S.G.D.G. is very tiny and may not be correct.
Can anyone offer some info on what this may be?

It's a wooden Buffet Albert system clarinet, no serial number, about 27" long from bell to tip of mouthpiece.

I searched the archives and found the following posting:
From: ROBERT HOWE <arehow@vgernet.net>
Subject: Re: Mysterious A clarinet....
References: <344EB0CF.B6754267@voicenet.com>
Precedence: bulk
NLI lists Gras, J as being in Lille, France 1868 to after 1950. Brevete
SGDG is French, appx meaning "Patented by this company".

Hello !
I explained it in an "old" posting, but didn't find it again in the database, so :
Brevete = patented
SGDG = Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement
= without warranty by the government
That means that the French government doesn't accept any responsability if something goes wrong due to a patented device. I suppose that the French gvt has been sued in the past for some problem or accident having occured with a patented concept. The SGDG mark was mandatory, but may now not be required, I'm not sure.

JIm,
It's better just to put a pointer (URL) back to the info if possible - in this case the copy loses the formatting.
