Just wanted to thank all of those who commented on the original post and let all of you know that I obtained a refurbished Selmer Signet Soloist wood clarinet for my sister.
This is an instrument from a local (to Cleveland, Ohio) rebuilding shop. I had the clarinet instructor for the New Horizons band evaluate this clarinet and she said it was a very nice horn.
The "Education" received from this site was highly valued and useful in the decision process.
Also, it was substantually less expensive than some of the new clarinets suggested and included a nice Portnoy mouthpiece.

The Soloist is certainly a nice clarinet. I played one a friend had just overhauled, and it sounded absolutely great. Like all clarinets, Soloists have to evaluated individually, but there are certainly some out there that are right up there with their French cousins.
Congratulations on getting a nice clarinet and saving a bundle!
