Well, I realize now that glissing up isn't IMPOSSIBLE. Hard maybe, but once you've got it down, you've got it down.
I've been listening to the few jazz cds I have lately and noticed two seperate performers do a gliss DOWNWARDS (or what appears to be one). Artie Shaw in the beginning of "Concerto for Clarinet" (only about twenty seconds in). Also, if anyone has Paquito D'Rivera's The Clarinetist, it's on track 4 entitled "Aconcagua/Concerto for Banloneon - Part 3" around 2:05.
Artie Shaw's downward glissando is very smooth and full sounding, while Paquito's was very 'thin' (however I'm thinking it may be thin on purpose for two reasons. 1), he's awesome and can probably use whatever tone he wants, 2) it ends up blending very well with the cello)
Am I correct in interpreting that this is just done as a glissando in reverse? (instead of sliding your fingers off the holes, they are slid 'on' the holes?) Or is it a glissando at all or just a trick of the embouchre or something (such as how a trumpet can half valve to make a horse whinny or something).

Did it seem like they went down very far? Perhaps they just lipped the note down a bit? I know I can get a pretty decent tone fingering a C above the staff 'lipping' down to about an A below, maybe Ab.

Well, Artie Shaw MAY have lipped it down. His change is over a very small interval. And he could have practiced it enough to get it JUST the right pitch. However Paquito's downward gliss (which once again can be heard on the CD. I know SOME of you have got to have it!) is at least an octave, if not more.

It works for me pretty much the way you describe it, Alexi. Fingers sorta slide onto the noles. Relaxing the embouchure a little bit helps too; 'lip it' a little more than when going up.
