I've always thought digeridoos, as played by Australian aborigines, sounded cool and have wanted one, but the thought of buying one by mail without testing it out first has always put me off. Then I realized that I could make one by converting my Buffet 1193-2 bass clarinet. The easy part was tossing the mouthpiece. I'd now like to close off all the tone holes permanently. Should I weld or solder the keys in a closed position or maybe put some wood filler in the tone holes and remove the keys completely? Any advice from someone who has done this previously would be appreciated.

Hey, has anyone tried playing their clarinet like a brass instrument? if you take off the mouthpiece and blow in the barrel you can make music and change the notes with the keys.

And don't forget to play the Tromboon (trombone with a bassoon reed instead of the brass mouthpiece).

Joel, it works maybe ok but with a clogged sinus problem you wind up with a hell of a mess about halfway down the horn.

You know, I am the one person that takes the mpc off my clarinet and can play it like a brass instrument with the notes in tune! Of course, the throat tones come out buzzy, but it still works. Also, buzzing into the bell with your horn upside always gets a good reaction. I do know how to play clarinet, I swear.
My suggestion, get a high quality duct tape... silver would match the keywork. or maybe even black to match the wood, and just start wrapping the bass. You may want to keep the neck strap loop, it may be a little heavy. :P

Caught the new guy. I'm almost 50 years old, started taking clarinet lessons last September because someone gave me an instrument. I've never played an instrument in my life but I'm having a ball. I've even played a duet with a flute and one with piano. I have a digeridoo and the post caught my eye but I never knew clarinetists had this kind of a sense of humor. Looking foreward to reading posts here.
Keep well all
