 French Repertoire info request
Author: Tom Piercy
Date:   2004-03-31 15:44

I have been asked to perform a program in a festival next season with a theme of contemporary French music.

By contemporary I mean living French composers of works written within the last 10 to 15 years.

I am looking for suggestions of works for clarinet with piano.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Tom Piercy

Tom,
I play in a clarinet choir with a fine French clarinetist named Jean-Francois Bescond, who is a U.S. rep for the Henri Selmer company ---- he is quite knowledgeable of the clarinet repertoire --- please email me and I'll forward you his email address (I hope he won't mind, but he's a very nice guy so he'll probably be glad to help).

Tom... International Music publishes a short 2 volume set titled "Contemporary French Recital Pieces" for clarinet and piano. (International publishing edition number 1839 and 1840).

Volume 1 has five short pieces and Volume 2 has six short pieces.

Although Milhaud, Jolivet and Henri Tomasi are clearly not within the last 15 years, there are eight other composers whom I had never heard of and may very well be quite recent....GBK

GBK,

Thanks.
Yes, I know of those compilations and they are not of recent vintage. Thanks, Tom

This is a tough one. It actually looks like Pierre Max Dubois may still be alive though I don't know if any of his clarinet works are within the last 15 years. Guy and Serge Dangain have both written for clarinet and piano, as has Alain Fourchotte. Have you looked through the Vandoren catalog? It might give you some other ideas.

Best regards,
jnk

I would HIGHLY recommend the Francaix Tema con Variazioni. He died in 1997, but I think that's close enough. It's a great piece.

You can try Jérôme Naulais as well. He's still alive, he's a good friend of Guy Dangain and he wrote several beautiful pieces such as "Parfum d'Orient" for clarinet & piano. Checking the online Vandoren catalog is a good idea.
