Hi everyone,
Just wondering if there are any other sources with decent websites for used instruments.
I know about eBay, Woodwind/Brasswind, Wichita Band, and the classifieds here.
Anything else out there?
FWIW, I'm interested in an eefer. I know you'll say, "Fat chance on finding a good eefer used and at a decent price," but I am frequently an optimist in these situations...

It's been a while since we've had a chat, but I read your posts and responses with keen interest. Up to your usual standards, this looks like an interesting topic. I have a couple of ideas I've picked up from others who now use or have used these sources.
Keep a lookout for school instrument sales. I've heard of band instruments being sold by the pound (as in scrap metal) and often there are a few good ones in the pile. Ask around and keep in touch. You probably won't have to spend much time in the actual transaction.
Pawn shops are still a not too bad source if you have the time to make rounds periodically. Once they get to know you and more or less what you're interested in they might even set some aside for you to pick from before they go up for public sale. Once the instruments are on display the prices they'll ask are probably more than you'll what to spend. You can invest a lot of time here.
I've been totally unsuccessful with yard sales but, to be honest, I haven't made much of an effort. You can spend an awful lot of travel time if you're shopping for specific items. Your best yard/garage sale finds are probably the ones you didn't expect.
I've seen a few mildly interesting horns at flea markets but didn't take the time or rather, wasn't interested at the time to explore the possibilities. I think it's worth looking into further though - if you like to go there anyway.
eBay sellers seem to sift out lots of stuff from estate sales. I went to a couple of estate sales two or three years ago and I guess you might do well if you get there early.

USA Horn in New Jersey. As with all things, hit or miss. They're bag is really vintage saxes, but sometimes they have interesting clarinets.

Howarth in London. They seem to have a lot of used instruments on their website.
Classifieds in the newspaper (if you haven't checked there already). You almost NEVER see clarinets listed in there, however it only takes a moment of your day to check so you may as well.
Garage sales ARE very hit or miss. I did happen to pick up a buffet B10 iun good shape for 75 dollars though a few years ago.
Check with the local schools/universities. Sometimes the professors there will also have private students who just bought a new horn or will be buying a new horn and will be looking to sell their old one. Just check up on them every now and then (as they can tend to forget who was looking for what).

In central US, we have Wichita Band,[as mentioned above] and in OK City, The Horn Trader, both are reliable used inst repairers/sellers. Several inst repair shops have used/repaired cl's etc for sale, I recommend the McGuires Band Inst Repair in Tulsa highly. Look around, Luck, Don

They have a used Selmer Eb listed under "used instruments" I(including photo)
I had a good experience buying from them, and they have a 10-day trial policy with 10% restocking charge.
Beware of stores that have no restocking charge - it means that it could take a long time to get your deposit back, and you might have to do a lot of pestering.

Unless, of course, said store also has no deposit (Wichita Band is an example).
I'm in the NYC area too, Larry, and I remember one dealer in particular whose shop I practically had to move into to get my consignment money on a horn he'd sold. (Not to name names...but the first name was an implement used in fishing, and the last a Mid-Atlantic city known for its peculiar dialect.) He eventually paid up, but boy, it took awhile.

Actually, Wichita Band now asks for a 50% deposit, but no restocking fee...
For what it's worth, I'd rather pay a store a predictable restocking fee than the interest to a bank for two months on a deposit, while waiting for the store to cut a check...
Where's "Reel Annapolis" anyway?
