In the December edition of the Clarinet, I read an article by Gigliotti about how he made 10G.When he went to Buffet factory in 1953 and tried 55(!) B flat clarinets and selected two best ones. And after that he spent countless hours with late Hans Moennig. He made Selmer 10G based on his Moenningized Buffet he played 27 years.
Now I know why my 10G was so good.

Actually, Mr. G. was one of my teachers and I recall him relating to me that he chose 2 sets, took them to Hans Moennig, another teacher of mine in the repair dept., had both sets set up and then chose the best set from those two sets on which to model the 10G after. I also recall during one of my lessons as the first 10G clarinets were coming out, not having much room in his studio since he insisted that Selmer allow him to test and approve the first 100 clarinets. His studio was full of them!

From the 10G's that I have played, they have continually improved since their development. I haven't tried one since about 1989, but from about 1975 till then, each one got better, and better. A true shame that Selmer didn't market them more effectively like their recital model, etc.
