Hey, I'm going to have seven (yep!) of my front lower teeth capped. Will this have any effect on my sound? Dental before and after problems with anyone here? Thank you.

If you play single lip, even a slight change in your upper teeth can make a big difference. However, since your lower lip contacts the reed and insulates the teeth, caps on the lower teeth caps make comparatively little difference. Caps usually are thicker at the bottom than original teeth, so there may be a slightly environment for your tongue, but that's not hard to get used to.

I have 26 capped teeth. It felt a little different at first mostly because the old teeth were uneven and worn down. It now feels totally normal. I didn't notice any difference in my sound and none of my colleagues have said anything. Be careful about keeping your mouth wide open for long periods of time-my TMJ has never been the same. You could also have the dentist make the caps as similiar as possible to the old teeth. The dentists seem to be more concerned with cosmetic appearances-they want everything to be perfectly spaced and even, even if this changes your embouchure. You might want to bring your mouthpiece to the dentist's office so he can see which teeth will cause the most changes.

Your dentist will - more than likely - do all the prep work at the same time.
He/she will take an initial impressions before any work starts for a few good reasons:-
a) to make your temp crowns while the prosthetic ones are being made.
b) to give the lab information in order that they can emulate/alter the shape of the original.
c) to assess the occlusion (how your upper and lower teeth relate to one another.
If your dentist has an interest in your chosen hobby/profession he/she will be only too willing to hear and discuss any misgivings you have about the "change of shape/ embouchure interface"
If say, you normally traumatise your lower lip whilst playing due to sharp or irregular incisors, tell your dentist this and the incisal edges can be altered to suit.
Speaking as a practicing dentist (I'll get it right one day), I've not found that crowning has had any detrimental effect on playing in the long run. Small changes occur yes, but as a previous poster says, nothing usually to which you can't easily accommodate. Other examples would be the provision of orthodontic appliances - the player commonly adapts to these very quickly with no real problem.

Dr. Thomson, Following your advice, we found a "Park Avenue" dentist who is also a Oboe player (I spoke to him very slowly)! He understood what I needed (gave him your post) and in a few weeks I begin. My father's a M.D. and he did the search for me. Thank you very much.

Well my teeth are complete and I do look good! Seems that my playing has improved, teachers think my "old" teeth might have affected my mouth more then was previously thought! Now I need to work on my spelling, is there any chance this site will get a spell-checker? Thank's for all the great advice,

If your dentist has done a good job - your spelling will also improve without too much effort............. Just practicing for April 1st.
Glad you're looks have improved and hope that your sound may also.
