Dear Jimmy

Why? Would it not be best to simply concetrate on how good you sound...

What size reed are you up to at the moment?

Just use popsicle sticks....they are cheaper.

Jimmy,

Look for a very close mouthpiece, something like older Selmer HS (no star) with a tip opening - 0.92mm, facing length - 18mm.

And a longer facing (18 mm I guess is pretty long). A gigliotti P would work well too (recommended strength 4.5 to 5.0 V12)

Still, I doubt even with such closed facings a player could get a #5 Vandy to work consistently...they are just incredibly thick....maybe switching to a german model clarinet may be in order/

According to a German mouthpiece spec sheet, the highest they go is 4.5

See: http://www.hans-zinner.de/Produkte/Hans_Zinner_English/Products/Facing_lists/facing_lists.html

However, according to the Vandoren site, the M!3 and the M13 Lyre can both take a #5 reed. http://www.vandoren.com/Product/vanMID.htm

Why? Please explain the need for a thicker than necessary reed. I'm thinking maybe one of those fingernail file deals, that have the orange side and beige side. That way you can rid yourself of chapped lips at the same time.
