 Age of LeBlanc Dynamique

A while ago I purchased a LeBlanc Dynamique serial #5XX off of eBay. From the first time I blew it I've been in love and have forsaken all others (a small pile {5} of Buffets). I emailed LeBlanc trying to find out how old it is, I assume late 40's early 50's. Of course, they didn't respond. Does anyone out there have any clues?

Oh yes, on the logo the G. is on the same line as the LeBlanc.

Call Leblanc in Kenosha (phone number on their website) and ask for Dave Surber - he's the man for dating instruments. He might take a while to get back to you (you might have to leave a voice mail message), but he was helpful to me.

Apparently, LeBlanc's records don't go back before 1964. Before that, Dave Surber can make an educated guess based on his knowledge of production levels for certain instruments.

good luck

Some info is in the Archives; when Dave Surber can't give you an exact date, nobody can.

"In the middle 50s, Leblanc came out with the Dynamique model, later the Dynamic II and the Dynamique H...and yes, they did change the spelling as you see it. These were large bore clarinets that had a very even sound throughout the registers. The H stood for Houvenagel who was the chief accoustician with Leblanc and designed all of these models. Leblanc still has a "descendant" of these models in the Pete Fountain model."

best,
mw

Vytas's information is always very good. This may also help: in 1955 I bought a new set of Dynamiques, #'s 4484 & 4497, so yours, of course, is before that. As I recall, the Dynamique was first marketed about 1953.

Thanks a lot, that dates it pretty well and right about where I had estimated from searching this site and the internet. Douglas, you wouldn't want to sell your pair? I'd love to find an A for this Bb.

Not long after I bought my Symphonie (about 1951), Leblanc began to advertise the "Symphonie Dynamique." Perhaps someone is aware of this instrument and whether it was just an early label for the Dynamique, or was it indeed a different stick? I played one specimen one time, and that was enough for me. I continued to play the Symphonie for about ten years.

Regards,
John

To answer Bill about the availability of the Dynamique set I purchased in 1955, about 1960 I changed to the "improved" Buffet clarinets and sold the Leblancs. At the time the Buffet clarinet models were much improved and I recall that Bill Brannen said something along the lines of "Buffet is doing something new and the clarinets are much better"...no one at that time was using the term "polycylindrical" and the model designation of R13 was already being used, so people only realized Buffets were better than they had been.
