Hi all,
This post is to thank everyone for the help that they have provided over the last few years. You have helped my daughter greatly. I have posted a picture of my daughter with her clarinets so you can see the person you have helped. Her name is Julia, she is 14, and has been playing the clarinet for just over 2 years.

Mark,
I'm glad to see that you're prepared with a back up clarinet. Just in case the #1 is in the shop. Or the #2, #3, #4, #5, etc!

Mark, yours is a singularly fine gesture. If anything I've written has been of any help at all, you are most welcome.
Julia certainly has a winning smile. It's good to know she has talent, too. By the way, what is she holding in her right hand? Is that what I think it is?

I forgot to identify those clarinets for you. So here goes, from left to right.
Buffet "A", 1932, Buffet full Boehm 1936, Buffet R13 1955, Buffet "LP" 1912, Conn Pan American 50's, Julia is holding her beloved Buffet C12 1987, American Standard by H.N.White early 50's, Noblet 1961, Silver King by H.N.White 1941, Bettoney Silva-Bet serial S30 (before they named it the Silva-Bet) 1925, Bettoney Silva-Bet serial S732 My guess 1926-1927.
They are all restored and playable, and they do get played.
Julia has built up a mouthpiece collection as well. Her current favorite is a Ch Chedeville refaced by Dave Spiegelthal.

What does she use the metal ones and the FB for?
Just curious...she must be one heck of a player after two years to be able to use and appreciate such cool equipment...

The metal clarinets she uses outdoors in cold weather or when she "feels" like switching over to one of them.
The FB on the other hand, I want her to learn to transpose to an "A". It's a great sounding horn non-the-less.
I just picked up another Buffet FB. This one is wood, but the upper and lower joints are made in one piece. It is all apart now as I am overhauling it. Can't wait to hear it.
Funny thing though, a FB clarinet is roughly the same length as an "A". Most people don't realize that the low Eb adds about an inch and a quarter to the over-all length.

The Full Boehm A clarinet (with low Eb) is about 1 1/2 inches (38.1 mm) longer than the standard A clarinet...GBK

I understand that you can transpose down to an "A" with a Bb FB with a low Eb key.
What I do not understand is a FB "A" with a low Eb key. Where are we going with this? Are there enough pieces written in "A" that go down to low Eb? Am I missing something?
On another note, Julia loves her Buffet "LP". I love it because it has the wrap-around register key, but not the @#$%& donut key.
As far a Julia taking up the flute....It's not up to me, but she has been fooling around with a violin lately.

I posed this question to two people, at two different times. Apparently, there are a few compositions where it is written to low Eb in A clarinet (my college professor seemed to remember one by Stravinsky, although the name of the piece escaped him). That would be the NEED for one. He stated that he really hasn't had to worry about it and often that low Eb was doubled by other instruments so no one really would miss it anyway.
Aside from that, I can't see a NEED for one, however I'm sure it comes in handy when playing a Bb scale or any sorts of trills or the like to a throat Bb. It's just got to sound better than the 'pinch' fingering!
