 Scherzo

Is it "SHerzo" or SKerzo"? My director made fun of my pronunciation today. I'd like for him to have been wrong. ;-)

It is skertzo ... I'm afraid NOT sherzo or shertzo.

And ... don't get your knickers in a twist over a remark some knuckle-headed band dirctor makes, just be comforted by the fact that he's probably a trumpet player or, worse still, percussionist.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Please pardon the major confusion this may cause in respect to undergarments, but it´s "scherzo", according to the ever helpful "Webster´s Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language", it´s a neologism, an 'italianized' version of the German "Scherz" for "joke". No "g,k" or the like sound after "sch"...[tongue]

Am I getting you right, Markus? You reckon it's pronounced "shairtso"?

I know my pronunciations are horrible. But it's not about how you pronounce things, it's about how you play them. It's nice to know how to pronounce them, just don't feel bad or anything if you pronounce them wrong until you're corrected. Cause if noone ever told you, how were you supposed to know?

I played a gig a couple years ago where my saxophone (yes, saxophone) quartet was playing French parlour music at a poetry reading. The poet did a recitation of one of her works in which she pronounced scherzo "sherzo". Very tough for us to play while trying to stifle laughter at the same time.

Only a scheming schizophrenic would cause a schism by scheduling a scherzo...

A little help from Europe! I agree with Jed 100%. An explanation given by Markus is OK except that pronounciation in Italian has changed the original
Schertz into Sker(t)zo. And I hope Krisat your band director was wrong!

Nope, definitely not "sker(t)zo", ´d be much too sharply pronounced. Germish in Hollywood-productions form the 50ies and 60ies may sound like that, or the English spoken by various politicians form olden Europe here, but "scherzo" is a more softer, guttural sound, towards like "schgertso" (how to I imprort phonetic fonts in here...??). Anyway ,it may easliy be the "kindergarten" versus "kindergarden" - effect of anglosized neologism, methinks.
