Anyone familiar with the R13 conservetoire? Has the word "conservetoire" embossed below the logo on the upper joint. I just got one from an eBay auction in fantastic, near mint condition. 200,000 range serial number.
A friend who is a clarinet repair technician told me he had seen just one other like this ever and he thought it was a specially designed R13 that was intended at the time to compete against the freer blowing Selmer Series 10 or something.
Any info about this model clarinet? I tried it out last night in orchestra rehearsal and it was great. I have been playing on a Yamaha 72 in silverplate. Don't know which I prefer yet. Both great horns.

Hmmm .... figured it was a Buffet C-12. That is, the C-12 was (previously) the Model known as the "Conservatory". I noted that it was spelled "Conservatorie". Anyway, I've been wrong before & this won't be the first time.
NOW, I've never heard that Selmer comment before. Selmer was so far behind in the "race" with the Model 10, that I've never heard of a Buffet model that was introduced to compete with Selmer during that time period - no offense to Selmer afficionados - I like Selmer's & the extra room they afford my hands, too!
The YCL72s is a great clarinet. Yamaha did a superb job of copying another manufacturer's Bore & the intonation of the 72's I've had a chance to play was pretty much "right-on". Keywork is reliable, especially newer bridge design. It's a very fine orchestral instrument.
Best of luck with your "new" clarinet,
mw

The C13, TTBOMK, was a marketing ploy within North America for non-catalogue retailers. Larger non-catalogue retailers had pushed for this. Perhaps, a tad nicer than the E-11 - although I never could tell the difference.
The C-12, too, was a (higher end) INTERMEDIATE model and though it may have been styled after the RC Model/Bore it would have been a step down. from pro model.
The FAQ archives over @ TMB/BC's website are not working well today (or there may be a problem or they are 'tween some changes).
best,
mw

The C 12-13, is just one step below RC model, but it is a very good model. I had a chance of trying all the Buffet clarinets, and they sound the exact way they are priced.
E-11 and E-12 are not produced in Buffet s factory in France, but in Germany, all other better models are produced in France nowadays.

C12 and C13 are two different models.
C13/International is a slight step above the E11. It's actually E11 that received more hand finishing. Made in Germany.
C12 is a professional model that was made in France and is in between R13 and E13.
Buffet "CONSERVATOIRE" very rare professional clarinet was sold in Europe in the mid 80s. Made in France.
