Reed to use on Sapphire Pomarico?
Author: legitsax

Howdy hi hello

I recently purchased a Pomarico Crystal mouthpiece. It's the mellow type with a sapphire facing, and my question is this (as i am not a very good clarient player), what sort of reeds do you really suggest on an open mouthpiece like that? I like the sound for classical, and i've been going between the 4 V-12's and the 3.5+ 56's, but i'd like the input of a more experienced clarinetist

Thanks in advance!

Geez, it must be great to be a "not very good clarinet player" and to be able to play a Pomarico. No sarcasm here, just envy....And the answer is "a crystal reed, of course"....

I use softer reeds than what you list. While I do less sop playing than bass/alto, I find that LaVoz Med/med-hard are all that I need. I use sax reeds on the biggies, about a 2 is adequate. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

mr legit

Having used Pomarico for a number of years, and being in close contact with Riccardo Clerici......I'd recommend using Mitchell Lurie Premium
2 1/2 or 3 strength for the sound you're trying to get. Zonda # 3's are also good on the Saphire.

John Gibson, above, has provided a very astute recommendation.

How does one actually pronounce Pomarico? Like Poma Rico? or have it all mushed together like Pom-Arico?
I've been mispronouncing things lately. :P

Now, Mr Pomarico IS Italian (have I got that right Mark?). CG, it's Po (Like Poe in Edgar Allen), ma-ri-co, with a slight stress on the 'ma'. So it's Pomarico, all together, not Poma Rico.
Hope that helps :)

Well, thanks for all this attention. Justwannaplay is right: as we are italians our name is not pronunced as americans and english do.
Italian alphabet (as spanish and french: our cousins) is different from the english one. You (as english language persons) use to pronuce "Pomerico". Well, if I am right, I think that the right pronunce is something like: poma:*riko.

Best regards

Okay.....there you have it, from the MAN himself. Riccardo Clerici. Any questions about Pomarico should be directed to him.

A note also. The "r"s in italian are pronounced differently. Very dificult to put while typing without being able to say it and give an example. Hmmm . . . lemme see if I can find a link . . . .

http://italian.about.com/library/fare/blfare103d.htm

That's a decent explanation.

http://italian.about.com/library/fare/blfareindex02.htm

That's just some audio examples of the different style. Listen to the "r"s there.
