I played this last year when I was considering using it in my Grade 7 exam. I liked it very much - although in the end I went for the Tartini Concertino mvts 3 and 4, which was on the same list, because I felt I played that better! :)

play von Webern instead. although v.Weber is still a whole lotta better than candid Wolfgang - how the latter always outruns the former I´ll never understand.

Markus,

I think you're slipping. Rather than recommending Mr. G substitute Webern for Weber, I would have expected you to recommend he substitute 7 Brightnesses for 7 Variations. [rotate]

Got me, Jack - if You´re referring to P.M. Davies´ composition, I have to agree, "The Seven Brightnesses" is an incredible compoition, I love to play it very very much; this is how New Music´s meant to be indeed. Webern surely would love it, too. I promise to make up for my slipping next time. [grin] Markus

It's been awhile, but it seems to me that one of the final Variations had "dotted " rhythms which as they changed on length of note made that variation more difficult to stay on beat, as the piece progressed. Definitely fun & challenging. [... could easily see HOW it was a variation ]

I remember 1 &2 very well - and would say that when I was studying OP 33 I needed to pay attention to "popping" notes - ie controlling higher notes in context to others within the same phrase or measure.

best,
mw
